Why Email Marketing is So Important: If you are not building a list you are losing money!

What is it that makes email marketing so important? The money is in the list… I bet you’ve heard that by now right? Let’s take a look at why you should start building your email list as soon as possible and what makes email marketing such a vital part of your marketing strategy.

why email marketing is important

You Own Your List

This for me is the most important and exciting part of email marketing. When you build a list you own it. Just think of what could happen if for example your website got penalized by Google today. No more organic traffic? Not good right?

What if something happened to Facebook and you lost all your followers?

Your list belongs to you and nobody else. This is something that cannot be taken away from you. It is a way you can keep in direct contact with all of your readers no matter what happens.

This alone makes it the most important marketing tool.

Email Marketing is Cost Effective

The price per email is very low, which makes it very cost effective. When you first start out you can use Mailchimp which is free for the first 2 000 subscribers and you can send up to 12 000 per month. This is a great way to get started building your list at no cost.

Once your list has grown I do suggest moving over to another email autoresponder that offers more features such as Aweber. Packages start at $19 per month.

With Aweber you can automate blog broadcasts, a series of emails and also send out broadcasts when needed. This will take some time to set up in the beginning but once you have done this it is completely automated which will save a lot of time in the future. Remember time is money. This won’t take the same amount of time on a continual basis like for example social networks will.

Spend the time in the beginning to set it all up and it runs on its own. What’s not to like?

Email Marketing has a High Conversion Rate

Email marketing has proven over and over again to have a high conversion rate. Email subscribers are ready to engage and they want to hear from you. This is clear from the fact that they have given their email address to you.

The fact that you can send out a series of emails to a new subscriber means you can build a relationship of trust while keeping in mind the customer life cycle. Once your subscriber has received all the newsletters in that series the chances of a conversion are much higher. This makes email marketing incredibly relationship focused.

Once a subscriber is purchasing from you, you also have the chance to keep making sales to that customer over and over again when you have new products on offer. This is invaluable.

Email Marketing is Personal and Customizable

You can send messages to individual people or groups of people, you can include their names and make them feel like you talking right to them. This makes it very different to social media where messages are sent out to the anyone and everyone.

You can also choose who receives a message and who doesn’t, ensuring that your audience gets exactly the right message at the right time.

Email Marketing is Measurable

This is a wonderful aspect of email marketing. It is easy to track opened messages, bounce rates, delivery rates, click through rates, conversions and unsubscribes. This means you can go back and see what works and what doesn’t. Over time you can tweak your campaigns to be hugely successful. You can also do split testing which will help you to find out what works best.

Email Marketing is more Popular and more Effective than Social Media

Email communication is the number one form of business communication and I can’t see this changing any time soon. You can’t even open up a social media account if you don’t have email.

What is the first thing you do when you get to work? I’ll bet it is check your emails right?

Email is very actionable too, every email requires an action.. even if that action is delete or unsubscribe. It requires the recipient to do something with the email.

Sending an email message also means the message is direct to your audience, the recipient might not read it immediately but it has found its destination and it will stay there until an action is taken.

Social media on the other hand is very different. The life span of a social media message can be hours, sometimes even only a few minutes. If your targeted reader is not there at the right moment the message is missed. I recently read a statistic that stated only 2% of your Facebook Fans will see your message!

These are some great reasons to get started with email marketing, if you sign up with Aweber they will take you through how to set everything up and you will be on your way in no time.

  1. wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!, how good is this?. Never really thought E-mail marketing was so important. For a couple of months now I’ve been seeing stuff here and there about the importance of E-mail marketing but I was never really serious about it and the funny thing is that, during this time, I’ve been relying so much on social media and other ways to drive traffic to your site. Thanks a lot for this message and am sure to start with Email marketing as soon as possible.
    Cheers

    • Hi Ramirez, glad to help! I love social media too, but really email marketing is tops and you can probably see why. Enjoy setting up your email marketing campaigns, it really is fun! Let me know if you have any questions.

  2. Hi Lynne,

That was a very insightful article that you wrote explaining the importance of including email marketing as part of your online business.

I recently got into email marketing and in fact bought into Aweber’s great system.

Indeed email marketing is essential and for the reasons that you described in your great article. The list would belong to you – not Google, Yahoo, Facebook, or anyone else once a person subscribes to this list.

This is a marketing tool that cannot be beat something that you also state within the body of your article!

Great job Lynne and I hope that eventually you will have hundreds of subscribers active on whatever product(s) that you are promoting in your business!

    Sincerely,
    Jeff

    • Hi Jeff, thanks for visiting again. I hope you are enjoying Aweber as much as I am, I was using Mailchimp for a long time and I had no idea that so many things could be automated until I found Aweber!

  3. Although I am a newbie to internet marketing I agree email marketing with our own list is the way to go. I know from my experience I buy only after receiving several emails with great content seeking to help me. It builds great trust and I’m usually not disappointed with my purchases. Also, as a trusting buyer I tend to buy several times.

Building a list with solo ads is relatively inexpensive and really targets the needs of prospects. Also, SEO experience is not necessary.

    Are all autoresponders created equal?

    • Hi Chuck, as with any product or service offered there can be really big differences. I have not tried a lot of email service providers. I used Mailchimp for free in the beginning and then moved to Aweber when my list got larger. I didn’t realize how much more Aweber offers. If I was aware of that I would have moved over much sooner.

I will be reviewing other autoresponders soon, but from what I gathered when doing my research Aweber is one of the best, if not the best.

  4. Hey Lynne

Great post and so true that Email marketing is a crucial aspect of online marketing!

A list offers sooo much more return for your efforts, especially if you can offer your list value through the information that you are providing them. Slipping in the odd sales pitch here and there then become an easy return on investment.

    Keep up the awesome work!

    Cheers,

  5. Hi Lynne, thank you for putting it clear and simple..I’ve been postponing building on my email list for at least 2 months now. I’ll set it up tomorrow and start doing exactly what you wrote. Do you maybe know if there is a higher rate of getting a subscribers when you offer a free eBook?

    • Hi Kat

Oh yes, offering a free eBook increased my subscribers!

I wrote a post on what writing an eBook did for me, and I am also offering it to other online marketers to give away on their websites! Check out my post about my eBook.

  6. This page on email marketing is packed with good tips! I recently set up a MailChimp account and I’m really glad I read this because I didn’t know that Aweber had more features. Once my list gets going I will definitely take a look at what they have to offer. Very nicely laid out and easy-to-read info here. I will definitely be checking out your other pages for more recommendations. 🙂

    • Hi Shannon

I started with Mailchimp too, they are good and it is a wonderful way to start for free. If you are wanting to keep your costs down stay with them for as long as possible and then move over to one that has been features when you are ready.

Have you read my post on writing an eBook? You should really check it out, it will really help you get more subscribers signing up! You can also use my eBook for give away on your website with pleasure!

  7. Wow never knew that emails are so powerful. This is a great way to get to all your followers at first I was sceptical but then I realized myself that I really open up emails instead of Facebook and other social media. Do I need to create an account with aweber or can I utilize a plugin I have with WordPress?

    • Hi Joe
There are lots of ways to go about building an email list. The one I recommend the most is using Aweber. There are ways to get subscribers with plugins too but I have not really tried and tested these ways. From the research I did before signing up with Aweber everything pointed towards using an email autoresponder.

  8. Hi Lynne,

I just started with email marketing and this post is definitely wonderful!

I want to ask, what method do you find the best to get people subscribing? Is it a timed pop-up at the end of content? Does it enough if I just place a sign in form in the sidebar?

Thanks for this informative article 🙂

    • Hi Alblue

I am still busy testing to see what works best on my website as I am also quite new to this. I have a sign up form on my side bar, this is where I have received most of my subscribers from but it is also the first place I put my sign up form. However the best conversion rate is when I have added sign up forms within content where it has been appropriate. So for example the best conversion rate has been on my free eBook post.

Then the pop up form, well I am not sure how I feel about that. I have recently added a pop up subscribe form however I personally hate these. I just added one because I have heard that the conversion rate is the best for pop ups… but when I go to a website I find pop ups very annoying. So far the conversion rate for the pop up has been 1.8% where my side bar conversion rate has been 0.7%.

I will be doing A/B testing and doing more work on my sign up forms soon and I will be sharing my research.

  9. Online marketers have said a lot of positive things about email marketing and how it has huge impacts on building online businesses 🙂

Yep, I ‘ve heard that saying you mention, more times than I’ve had hot dinners! LOL.

From your article, I can definitely see the importance and the effectiveness of email marketing, and why I should implement it into my own online business. I’m so behind with the times! HA HA.

I’ll definitely check out Aweber, Lynne!

    Cheers.
    Neil

    • Hi Neil

I also heard the message so many times… and kick myself now for wasting so much time!

Let me know if you need a hand with anything?

      Lynne

  10. Hi Lynne, thanks for sharing your tips on email marketing. I’ve recently started working on email marketing tactics and your post has given me lots of useful information. I currently use getresponse as I’m more familiar with it, but I have also heard good things about aweber too.

After taking a look at your comments here I think I’ll also take a look at your ebooks post as I’m trying to see how to promote my free report /mini ebook.

Thanks for all the tips so far and I look forward to learning more from your posts :).

    All the best!

    • Hi Stephanie

I am happy to help. I have been very happy with aWeber but I have heard that GetResponse is really good too. I have seen that they have some really awesome sign up forms which are apparently so easy to set up.

I am a bit of a dummy when it comes to that sort of thing, I would love to know how you find their sign up forms!

I hope you enjoy the eBook post, you must grab Pat Flynn’s free eBook from his website about writing your own eBook it was brilliant and so helpful!
