About 20 years ago I got my first desktop computer and broadband Internet connection. And I decided to put it to use for me since I had it on finance. I decided that I was going to make my own website and blog and make hundreds of thousands of pounds from it every month! I was convinced after seeing all these other blogs doing really well that I could do the exact same thing and go on to retire early and live on my own private island!
Yes, I was convinced I would from this one blog of mine that it would go on to make me rich and famous and I’d be a self made millionaire after just a couple of years. However, those illusions de grandeur soon turned into a dose of reality when after publishing my first blog post, I found out that millions of people didn’t flood to my site to read it!
I mean really!? The whole Internet didn’t rush to read my first blog post!? Nobody? What the heck man? Perhaps I need to wait a few days. Perhaps it’ll suddenly happen and I’ll suddenly get a rush of traffic and clicks and start making money. Alas, that didn’t happen. Not even for months after!
Why not? What did I do wrong? Did I set my hopes way too high? You bet your back teeth I did! Nobody and I mean nobody (and their site/blog) turns into a guru overnight! It just doesn’t’ happen like that. Even back then when it was much easier to get a site ranked high in the SERPS.
And it wasn’t just me that wanted to jump on the band wagon and make money with my own website. It wasn’t and it’s not. Since according to a study done in 2011 by technology blog DazInfo, there’s around 111 million bloggers trying to and/ or making money with a blog or website of some kind.
That’s a lot of people! And I know that’s old data now, but fast forward 5 years and the numbers would have grown even more. Moral of the story, that’s a lot of people forging a living out of their online website or blog in some niche, industry or another.
But what are those bloggers doing to make their money? Well, they’re blogging of course! But in lots of different ways. And some of the ways will probably make you kick yourself and say “Damn it, why hadn’t I thought of doing that myself”?

10 Ways to Make Money Blogging
Number 1: Dress Up Like a Superhero and Act Crazy for the Camera
I had to include this blog money making method first of all before the rest of them as it’s just a fun way to start this list off! But jokes and laughter aside, there are many creative people that are killing it by doing this! By simply dressing up like a super hero and and acting up for the camera.
And don’t just take my word for it, check out those videos on YouTube by people that do it. Some of those videos have over 1,000,000 views! Enough said really! When all it takes is dressing up like a superhero and acting a fool in front of the camera (you don’t even have to show your face). Then just upload that to YouTube, make a blog post about it (embedding your video into it of course). And voila! You have a practical way of making money.
Mind you, this method isn’t for everyone! Not everyone is comfortable running around like a badly dressed super hero with ADHD. Mind you, it could also be a lot of fun? And to be honest, some of those videos are just plain hilarious! Plus they’re making a passive income from it too so power to them!
Number 2: Placing Ads on Your Blog (Google Adsense etc)
One of the most common and profitable ways to make money from your blog (and a staple way for many bloggers for many years now) is to place ads on your site with an ad network service like Google Adsense etc. That way, you get paid every time someone clicks on one of those ads.
This is a good way to make money from your blog but the trade off is that your visitors will see ads on your site and some people don’t like that. Some people even use ad blocker software so don’t ever even see them! However, if you have a lot of traffic, then this method can be profitable & lucrative.
Number: 3: Be an Amazon Affiliate and Sell Amazon Products
Selling Amazon products is also another very popular way to make money from a blog today. All you have to do is sign up to Amazon Associates as an affiliate for them. Then place their products on your blog that includes your affiliate links. Then each time a visitor clicks through to that product and buys it you make a commission for it. What could be simpler?
You could go all out and create your own Amazon affiliate site/blog. Or if you have a blog in a certain niche, you could place Amazon products on it that match that niche. Such as books about business for a business related blog. Products for dogs about a dog blog. You get the idea!
The only drawback about this method is that you only earn 4% commission which doesn’t sound like much but for big ticket items it’s not bad and if you sell a lot of items, then that can all add up. The other is that you’re sending people away from your blog but hey, all in the name of making money!
Number 4: Sell Your Own Ad Space
This method is one of the best ways to make money quickly with your blog. But it only really happens for blogs that have a lot of traffic. Many people sell ad space on their blogs. Some even make a blog in a certain niche just to sell ad space on it! The trick is to advertising that you’re selling ad space on your blog (such as on community forums in your blogs niche). And generally, the more traffic you get, the more you can charge them for an ad.
The good thing about this is that you can make a good amount every month in advertising fees paid to you by those advertisers to keep advertising their banners or links on your site/blog. The drawback is that you’ll again be sending people away from your blog but at least you’re still getting paid!
Number 5: Write Blog/Product Reviews
If you have a popular blog then one of the best ways to make money with it is to write blog and or product reviews on it. This kills two birds with one stone. Firstly, by doing this, you’ll be generating lots of fresh and unique content for your blog which every blog needs in spades! Secondly, you’ll actually get paid for writing those reviews as well. You can just join sites like ReviewMe and PayPerPost to get paid reviewing things on your blog.
People usually look for in-depth reviews of things like products and services before they buy them. So you’ll need to do your research into that product or service first. Then write up your review of it and post that on your blog. People will come and read it and you’ll get paid for posting it too.
The only draw back with this method is that some places don’t pay much for your blog post review. However, there are some that can pay out quite well for it depending on the review itsellf, the complexity of the product/service being reviewed and how generous they are.
Number 6: Sell Memberships on Your Blog with a Fee to Access Exclusive Content
We are seeing this method being adopted and used on many more and more blogs these days. A lot of blogs are now charging their visitors a monthly fee to access exclusive content that normal users and visitors can’t get to see and read.
Such memberships for exclusive content can be very profitable for you if you churn out a lot of great quality content on a regular basis. Such websites as an example are ESPN who give exclusive access to the ESPN Insider scoops for a small monthly fee.
Perhaps you could do the same on your blog for those people who want to get access to content they can read or watch that is exclusive to your ordinary content. The only drawback is that Google wont be able to see/crawl and index that content since it’s locked behind a login page.
Number 7: Make and Sell Your Own Products
This method of making money with your blog should probably be listed first because quite honestly, it’s probably the best way to make money from your own blog. Why? Because when you make and sell your own products, you don’t have to rely on commissions, you get 100% of the sale price as yours.
That basically means 100% profit each and every time you sell something. The only drawback is that it can take a lot of time to make your own products and that could be time well spent promoting your blog and driving traffic to it. Plus there’s overheads and other costs (taxes/shipping) etc.
However, if you can make your own products, whether they be physical products, books, keyrings, software etc, and actually sell them, you’ll make a lot more money than you would selling someone else’s products. But you do have full creativity and get seen as an expert in your industry!
Number 8: Find Products with Full Resell Rights & 100% Commission
While making and selling your own products means you get 100% of the profits, there are some certain companies out there that let you resell their products yourself and still keep 100% of the profits as opposed to only earning a commission for them!
Some companies actually make their products but give you 100% resell rights. Such companies include info-product companies that sell (or used to sell eBooks and other written literatures, manuals, guides etc).
You can find a lot of these by just searching around in Google. Find eBooks that are related to the niche your blog is in that come with 100% full resell rights. Then simply make a blog post about it and create buy now buttons using PayPal or something and bang! 100% profits for each sale.
The greatest thing about this method is that you can find literally thouands of eBooks and other info products that come with full resell rights. And you can sell them at any mark up price you want! Package it nice enough and do it enough times and this can be extremely profitable and lucrative!
Number 9: Sell Guest Posting Opportunies
This is similar to method 4 selling your own ad space. But if you have a big busy blog then you can advertise that you’re selling guest posting opportunities on it. There are many people that will pay a pretty penny to get a guest post on your blog. Whether it’s a popular blog or not!
I often get emails from people asking me to write for my blog. Most of them want to pay me for it. I’ve had blogs that get no traffic at all and they still paid me $100 to get a guest post on it. People will do that if it’s a blog in the same niche as theirs as those kinds of backlinks are valuable to them!
This also is a great way to get some relevant content for your blog at the same time. However, a possible draw back is that the article might not be up to the same standard as what you usually like to post and that can alienate your readers and subscribers.
Number 10: Ask for Donations / Tips
And last on the list of ways to make money from your blog is to actually just ask people for it! You’ll find lots of big blogs with a donate button somewhere. And that’s fair enough! If you’re bloggin’, you’re providing a service. Much like a waiter does, so you deserve a tip now and then!
And if you do have a popular blog, then asking for donations / tips from your readers can work since a lot of people who find your blog useful to them will want to thank you for it. And if they can easily give you a donation or a tip then they probably will do!
The only drawback to this method is that it can make you look a little needy. Especially so if you’re already selling products as an affiliate on your blog. Nobody likes a greedy blogger! Donation / tip buttons should be kept small and subtle not in your face donate or get out type of thing!
In all reality, there’s probably 1001+ ways to make money from your blog. These are just 10 of the most popular methods. 10 of the most common, most successful and most profitable and lucrative ways in fact. And all you really need to do to enjoy the benefits of each, is blog, blog and blog some more!
