What’s so Important about your About Page? You’ll be surprised!

Before I explain how to write an about page for your website I want to tell you why your About page is so important.

Even better have a look for yourself. Go into your analytics and see which pages on your website are viewed the most. I’ll take a bet that your About page is in the top 5 high traffic pages on your website!

So if you have an About page and you never put much thought into it, go back and update it as soon as possible.

Remember if this is one of your most viewed pages you are letting leads slip right through your fingers!

First lets look at what your goals are for this page, I’ll take a guess and say it is probably these three points:

  • Gain trust from your readers
  • Humanize
  • Lead Generation

So how can we optimize our About Page?

1. Headline?

Change your headline, “About” makes sense yes, but really you are losing out here. Make your headline catchy and answer a question: what can you and your site DO for your readers?

2. Introduction

Explain what your site can DOย for your readers, what value do you give them?

Add a call to action to subscribe after your introduction.

3. Testimonials

Have some social proof or some testimonials? Share them here. If you don’t have any testimonials please don’t make them up, just leave it out and add when you do have some to share.

4. Personal

Here’s where you share a few paragraphs about yourself

5. Close with a Call to Action

Close with a call to action to subscribe.

I hope you found this information useful, please leave a comment if you have anything to add!

  1. You have some good points, Lynne! I hadn’t even thought of these before – my about me page has the same boring name as most other website: “About me”. Neither did I think about adding a call to action to page. I will definitely have to add an option for interested readers to subscribe to my new articles in my about me page. How would you recommend me to implement this subscription for new articles feature?

    • Hi Matthew to be honest I have only just researched this information. I always thought the About page was just a page you had to have but didn’t have to pay much attention to. When I found out that it is one of the most viewed pages on a website I checked my Analytics and it is my 4th most viewed page!

I haven’t had the change to implement these steps on my website yet, but I wanted to get the info out there to everyone asap! I am going to be implementing this during the course of next week.

I am busy with my subscription options now and will happily give you some feedback once I have done this.

  2. Thanks Lynne! You are so right. I often visit the about me page to help me decide if I can trust the writer. Are they an expert? Do they have any training in the area? What is their experience?

Regardless of what we do on or off line, people want to know more about us in order to trust us. I never thought about testimonials. Great idea! Off to update that “About Me” page. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hi Melody, so glad you enjoyed this post and got some value from it ๐Ÿ™‚ I also need to go and update my About page now that I have learned this.

  3. Excellent advice and some top tips. I was actually more that unsure about what to write about little ol me in the about me page.

taking this on board and defo going to re read and book bark this for future reference. I had n’t thought about testimonials or closing with a CTA great ideas!

    • Hi Derek

Yes I also thought it was really just a page that you need but probably isn’t looked at much, what a mistake I was in thinking that. My About page is one of my most viewed pages on my website and when I realized that it became obvious I had to make some big time changes.

Happy to help and share this with you.

  4. I’m glad your page was here today, I needed to read the importance of the About page. I had forgotten it is more important to change the About Me to About Robert.
I also will may some adjustments to my about page as to testimonials, and to my title.
Again Thank you for your information.
    Robert

    • Hi Robert

Lovely to see you here again. Yes your About me page is a wonderful place to add some really great content and call to actions! Happy to help ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Hey Lynne! You got some really good points in your post. I learned alot of new things that i had not thought about. To add a call to action is really smart to get your readers attention and mabye you would get them to stick around longer on your website.

    • Hi Martin

When I first realized how much traffic my About page gets I couldn’t believe it. It was my 4th most viewed page at that time! Make sure you get the most out of that page.

  6. Lynne, that is so true and I’ve never even thought about it. Like the other people commenting on your page, I only thought that the “About” page was to give a blurb to let people know who you are, but you really should be marketing yourself much more through it. You’ve given me some great ideas on how to improve my page. Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hi Shannon

It is a pleasure, go and check your analytics! You will see how much traffic your About page gets, it really is a page that is not utilized enough.

  7. Glad I found this post as I am a website (blog) owner my self. Very helpful tips and I have bookmarked your site. To be hones I havenร‚ยดt put so much thought into my about me page, been focusing more on the actuall content… But this post made me change my mind and I will go and “look over” my about me page NOW ๐Ÿ™‚

Keep up the good work, I will be back for more tips!

    Thank you

    /John

    • Hi John

Happy to help! Like I said in my post go and check your analytics. You will find your About page is one of the most looked at pages… so yes putting some more thought into it will really pay off!

  8. Hey Lynne,
This article is an extremely useful while I was writing my About me page. I think it will make my site more reliable to my audience and hopefully help with conversions. I actually had never thought about adding a call to action at the end of the About Me page, but that is a really good idea!

    • Hey Alex

Well considering it is one of your most viewed pages you would be crazy to NOT add a call to action ๐Ÿ™‚ I am so happy I could help.

  9. Hi Lynne,

I did look at your website and came away with a couple ideas to incorporate into my own webpage, which I am still in the process of completing. I find the About Me page ideas you have are very good and will be well worth my time and effort to update, upgrade mine. You are the second person I have run across to endorse Wealthy Affiliate as an honest and trustworthy opportunity to make some money with. All in all your website is very informative and I will certainly use the information. Thank you.

  10. Hello

After reading your Article about how to write your about page, I have to admit that I went and checked Mine, and I found it lacking.

I will make sure to use your tips and re make my About page right now. Yes you were so right my about page is one of my pages with most traffic.

Thank you for taking the time to make this article, It made me see that I was missing the opportunity of improving a vital part of my website.
