How to make Money Online from South Africa: Does earning residual income in USD sound good to you?

Have you asked yourself yet how to make money online from South Africa? I’m sure you have!

Are you sitting at home in South Africa wondering what is happening to our exchange rate, the strength of our rand and how on earth we are going to get through this drought, while watching the food prices steadily increasing? Are you wondering what on earth the future holds for us here in South Africa?

How to make money online from south africa in 2016

How to make money online from South Africa?

How much money do you want to make and what currency?

For me personally I want to make USD, for obvious reasons to anyone residing in South Africa. So what are the options for making money online in South Africa?

Do you want to earn just a little extra money on the side? Here are some options you might enjoy:

Answered Insight Surveys (click here to read my review): The earning potential is not high and you won’t receive a lot of surveys… BUT I have been doing this for a good number of years and there have been a few occasions that this money has come in hand! You make R20 per survey and each survey takes about 10 – 15 minutes.

User Testing (click here to read my review): Test websites and earn $10 for each website tested and it takes about 20 minutes to do a test. The trick here is that there are not a lot of tests that I qualified for but it is quick to check out when new tests come in. But the amount earned for your time is not bad at all for some extra cash.

Clixsense (click here to read my review): This is a PTC website and the earnings are really low! But it only takes a few minutes every day to check in and complete any PTC offers or surveys available. Once again this small amount of money could add up. I have now made a total of $11.24 on this website.

How about starting a REAL online business in South Africa?

So you want to make some real money online in South Africa? Well see this is what gets me excited. Here are some options for you:

Online Store: I have 2 online stores, a retail baby store in South Africa and then a wholesale baby store. It is the same company, just different websites for the wholesale and the retail. If you want to try out this option I suggest you check out Shopify (click here for my review).

So having an online store is great, it is my own business and I can work in my pjs which I love. The problem I find is the following:

  • How do you learn how to run your website: add content, get it ranked and get traffic? It takes time and practice to learn all these things
  • Depending on what you do you are most likely still going to be earning rands (I’ll get into the state of the country a bit later on)
  • The cost of getting stock in can be huge
  • Marketing and selling your products can be time consuming and there is a lot of competition depending on your niche
  • Packaging, shipping and all the admin work that goes with this can be costly and time consuming
  • If you have products you are tied to one place! If you want to go away on holiday you are not able to unless you have staff to take care of your business. And if you have staff this comes with its own set of problems and expenses!

So what do I recommend that will solve all of those challenges?

Affiliate Marketing of course, I started with this in 2015 and I am loving it.

**Update to this information about my baby stores**

I closed both my online stores i February 2016 so I can just blog! I changed my baby store to a mommy blog and here is why.

So long story short, through Wealthy Affiliate University (which I HIGHLY recommend) I have earned my first USD.

This is a real business though so it has taken time and effort to get it going. I launched this website on 23 June 2015 and I cashed out my first income for this website 01 January 2016. Yes it was only $53.50 BUT when I cashed that out via Paypal I got R800.69. And yes I have the Premium Account at Wealthy Affiliate so I am paying them $47 every month. However the support and training I receive there is incredible. Click here to read my detailed insiders view for insight into the incredible level of training within the Wealthy Affiliate University platform.

I have earned another $22.50 this month and when the training I published on Wealthy Affiliate gets approved I will be paid another $20. This is just the beginning because my website traffic is now growing nicely and with that will come more money.

How to Make Money Online in South Africa

The beauty of what I am learning now is how to create a residual income, so the work I put in now will continue to pay off for years to come. I consider this an investment for my future and the future of my family.

This is just the beginning for me earning USD. I can promise you that this will grow in the months to come and I will most certainly bring you some updates as I go along!

So why am I concerned about South Africa?

This is where I live and I’ll be honest with you, things are getting just a little too concerning for comfort.

See here’s the thing, with our Rand so weak we are going to have to do something to survive aren’t we? Apparently our Rand is plummeting faster than the Zimbabwean dollar did when they started heading downhill.

On 10 December 2015 www,cnbc.com announced that the Rand was at a low of R15.2405 to the USD. They said it would possibly drop further. Fast forward to today and I check on Coinmill what the USD to ZAR exchange rate is and it is R16.78 to the USD.

All I can say is that if we continue at this rate we are in big trouble.

The Unrest in SA is Very Concerning!

So we have our president making a mockery of us, I’m sorry but that is just the way it is. I don’t want to be unpatriotic here, but Zuma you make it impossible. On top of that our country is having a serious drought and our rand is just plummeting…

Zuma’s New Jet?

Our country cannot afford that was promised years ago. There is still a serious housing shortage, our children are hungry, our education system is shocking, our health system is a joke and our President is buying a R4 billion jet?

What about spending that on something that is really needed?

Zuma

And what about the R246 million he spent on “security upgrades” to his personal home? And brushes it off as if it was nothing at all! This is not great stuff. How many people in South Africa don’t even have a home, or live in a shack? How many people don’t have electricity (oh wait haha most of us…see further down) or running water?

What sort of difference could R246 million make to those people? How many families could have been housed. It makes me want to cry thinking about it, what you have stolen from these people. They were promised homes… were are these homes?

And this is spending our country’s money willy nilly without a care in the world for your people Zuma? We have so many very serious problems and this money could have made a real difference to the people of South Africa.

Finance Minister Fiasco?

I mean really what is going on here, three Finance Ministers in such a short period of time. This had serious economic consequences.

Racism is Rife!

This is supposed to be the New South Africa, The Rainbow Nation,  and we should be working together to make this beautiful country the best it can be. In social media there is mud slinging, hate speech and serious threats. Let’s move on people, let’s build this country up and stop tearing each other and this country down.

Perhaps if we started focusing on the corruption within our government instead of ripping each other to pieces we could finally move forward?

South Africa’s Unemployment Rate is Concerning!

So here we are at the start of 2016 and according to tradingeconomics.com the unemployment rate is about 25%.

#ZumaMustFallBillboard ?

So there has been a huge scandal about the #ZumaMustFallBillboard that went up recently on Long Street, Cape Town, and that the ANC then very quickly tore down. Suddenly there are a whole stack of funny photoshopped versions trending on Twitter. I mean this is hilarious, have you seen the price of avos this week? I saw in Pick n Pay that they are R18.99 for one avo or R68.99 for a pack of 4. I couldn’t believe it, is this what is happening to our food prices this year? Yeah looks like we are going the way of Zimbabwe very quickly!

#ZumaMustFallBillboard avos

And don’t forget about trying to censor the internet! Oh dear I had better watch what I say now! And of course let’s not even talk about our electricity problem, I’ll just leave you with this pic below instead which says it all.

Eskom don't use electricity

The Future of South Africa

So I’m not really worried about myself here. What I see are my children. I wonder what will things be like when they graduate from school?

Will they ever get a job and even if they do will they be able to afford to eat on their salary with the way things are going?

Does this mean I want to immigrate?

No. This is my country. I was born here and I have a right to be here as much as anyone else. We live (in my opinion) in the most beautiful place in the world.

Cape Town

My family will be fine, I will make sure of that. My business will bring in foreign income, I will have a legacy to pass on to them one day.

But what about YOUR family? What is happening to the buying power of your income right now, look ahead and plan!

  1. Hi Lynne I really like the idea. So WA is a kind of multi level marketing business where you earn if you sell their membership deals? Does this depend then on how wide your own social contacts extend ie how many people you know who you can encourage to buy in? How does what you learn with them help with your online business? Its a lot of money in rands to buy top class training from WA but do you use much of it? How quickly are you recouping your $49 monthly investment? Thanks Jane (retired)

    • Hi Jane

Not exactly, Wealthy Affiliate offers an affiliate program NOT an MLM program. There is a very big difference between the two and perhaps that should be the topic of my next post 🙂

In case you hadn’t noticed I am NOT fond of MLM!

For starters you don’t have to pay anything to Wealthy Affiliate to be able to earn commission from referrals to them, you won’t earn as much commission as if you are a Premium member though.

All MLM programs you can’t earn unless you pay to join them!

Read my review on Wealthy Affiliate to get a better understanding of what they offer. Yes you can make money promoting them if you want to and I chose to do this, however that is not the only thing they teach you.

They will teach you everything you need to know about working online, whether you want to set up your own online store, whether you want to do affiliate marketing but in a completely difference niche and not promote them at all.

The choice is completely yours and Wealthy Affiliate will help you to achieve whatever it is YOU want to do with YOUR online business.

On this website I am also affiliated with other companies, so it is not just about promoting Wealthy Affiliate. I look at all the opportunities and tools I find online. I review them and let you know what I think about them. The ones that I don’t like I don’t affiliate with and the ones I think are great I do affiliate with. It is as simple as that.

And of course I also share information I have learned about online marketing that I think are valuable and can help you on your journey into the online world 🙂

  2. There is economic hardship in all countries so leaving your own might not be a great idea unless you really want a change of scenery. And with scenery like the picture you showed us…who wants to change.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

    James

    • Hi James
Yes I agree with you on that. My way of thinking is that the grass is not always greener on the other side, it is just a different color green!

  3. Hi Lynne, fabulous post! I am so sick of the politically correct nonsense, not being able to express an opinion that differs from those expected… I love that I’m not the only one that likes to jump on a soap box (and I mean that in the nicest possible way). Why shouldn’t you speak the truth, and at the same time help others prevent potentially serious problems down the road. I support your recommendations for affiliate marketing through WA. For those of you who have read the post, and are unsure, that’s fair enough, but signing up is free, no sales pitch and you can judge for yourself. Live in uncertainty (in whichever country you are) or do something to change it.

    • Hi Hindy
Lovely to see you here again. Yes it is downright scary what is happening here, it is like a bad joke.

What bothers me is that our country has such incredible potential! We have a beautiful country and so many natural resources. We should be able to use this to be one of the wealthiest countries in the world…. yet we are stuffing up even being a tourist destination with our crime rate!

All I wish is for all South Africans to stop fighting with each other, start working together and pulling ourselves out of this hole we are digging ourselves into. It can be done….

  4. This is an amazing post. I like the different ways you actually do make money online. In South Africa it difficult to know what actually works – there a lot of ideas you put out there that I definitely will try. The ANC has done nothing to improve SA in recent months. And not to forget how the rand hit R17.99 to the dollar, we had 3 finance ministers in 3 days and the ANC using racist comments to take the attention away from the actual problems we are faced with. Love this post! !!

    • Yes Uwais, it really is sad how things are going here in South Africa now. I just hope people start opening their eyes to what is happening here, we really need to have a change in government. The crime and corruption is terrible. What really bothers me is that our leaders are stealing our country’s money right in front of us and rubbing our noses in it… yet we fight among ourselves? I’m just hoping and praying for some good change soon.

  5. Hi Lynne
Way to go with your site-I’ve been following you at WA for a couple of months now and think you hit the nail on the head with this particular niche.I am a free member at WA for now so communication issues with other members can be somewhat hampered apart from that the free training and two free websites can, in the long term, lead to making a decent online income especially when you consider around a 15:1 exchange rate thanks to Zuma’s ability to put his mouth in gear before his brain !!!

    • Hi Ron

LOL yes you got that right about Zuma and his mouth!

I totally agree with you that the communication is not so easy when you are on the free membership, which is why I highly recommend the premium account! But if you are struggling with money and want to start for free it is an excellent way to get started. Considering it is free they really do offer a lot!

  6. Great post Lynne. I’m saddened by the state of affairs in South Africa. As someone originally from India, I can empathize as things are not too different there! I wholeheartedly agree with you about affiliate marketing and it does not get better than WA to learn the tricks of the trade! I hope to reach the success you have soon..here is wishing both of us and all the other hard working affiliates all the success!

P.S I have wanted to visit Cape Town and other places in RSA for ages. I cannot wait to get myself and my family there..hopefully soon 🙂

    • Hi Shaz

Sorry to hear that you also come from a country that has a sad state of affairs 🙁

Yes you must come and see our country, it really is one of the most beautiful places in the world. We also have a great vibe here with so many different cultures and languages. Did you know we have 11 official languages? That has to be the most in the world lol.

  7. Hi Lynne,

I think this is a great post!

First of all, you explain the situation there is in South Africa. Second of all, you provide a legit solution for those who want to earn income online through a constructive feedback of all the services that are available out there, giving hope to everyone who lives in South Africa. And giving hope is a great thing.

Besides, you use your real numbers of your income, validating that indeed it WORKS. Not to mention that you will provide personal assistance to anyone who decides to build an online business.

Anyway, a very motivating post for those who live in constant uncertainty about what is going to happen next. Having a great online business AND in American Dollar currency definitely is a great option.

Keep up the good work to motivate people to act!

    Cheers,
    Zarina
In terms of myself – I was curious to learn about online business/shop, so I will browse your articles more to learn about online stores.

  8. Hi Lynne.

It is so disheartening to see the condition in SA. When is the next election? This election will be your countrymen time to shine. They need to vote for their lives or someone else, like Zuma, will vote for them.

I love how you love your country. I love Indonesia, too. We have our own problems. Our currency is stable but not that strong. To buy a Cheeseburger from MacDonald’s is still a privilege. The price is equal to 4 ordinary meals that you can buy at Warung (small rice kiosk).

As for your money solutions, I will try to check those survey sites.

    • Hi Arief

Yes the problem here is that not everyone votes, so many people I know don’t bother to vote at all and then wonder why our country is going down the tubes. It makes me really annoyed.

I hope Indonesia gets a stronger currency too, it really is a shame when our currency is so weak against the rest of the world. Umm yeah and I think MacDonald’s sucks anyway so that wouldn’t be a huge loss in my eyes haha

  9. It is amazing with all their debt and problems the US Dollar is stil the currency of choice for the world. Here in Canada our dollar is also dropping like a stone.
I think SA is still a very corrupt country. Glad to see your making money Lynne, after 6 months I’ve made squat, very disconcerting. I just seem to be spending more. Not everyone makes it but I’m happy you are. All the best
    ~Peter

    • Hi Peter

Yes we all want the USD! 6 months is usually when things start to happen Peter and I have visited your website a few times… nothing wrong with your content and what you are doing. I think maybe just a little more patience and waiting. I know not what you want to hear but most likely just what you need to do. Have some more coffee, add some more content and keep going. All the content you have added and everything you have done so far is the foundation of your business. Someone told me a little while ago (before I made any money off this website) that all the seeds are planted… it it just a matter of time for them to sprout.

  10. Hi Lynne
Wow you have been busy, love your posts. I like the fact that you used allot of our South African themes.
    All the best.
    Micelle

    • Hi Michelle

Local is Lekker! All the way 🙂

To my surprise I am finding that South Africans are loving my posts, which makes me pleased and proud. They are getting a lot of interest, initially I thought it would be good to target US and UK readers which is going well enough, but the South Africans are really piling in here. Maybe this is the answer, I mean the rate of unemployment here is insane!
