Are Taking Online Surveys Really Worth Your Time?

Can you make money taking online surveys? This is the question I have been asked so many times by others and that I have asked myself in the past.

Can you make money taking online surveys

I have spent a lot of time searching for and trying out online survey companies. I have personally tried out every one I came across before reviewing them. In general I have found this way of trying to make money online incredibly disappointing.

The best experience I have found so far was with Answered Insight surveys which is a South African company. I have been with them for a number of years and the reason why I really like them is because they are honest, they don’t mess you around at all with regards to the surveys and they pay out with no fuss. I have made a little bit of extra income through them and I still do their surveys when they get sent to me, just because hey the points add up after a long while and then it is nice to cash out a little extra. I have also found a lot of success with Clixsense, doing surveys and clicking on ads. You can read my review of Clixsense here.

Another legitimate and honest survey company is Opinion Outpost, click here to read my review.

Then there are the online surveys companies that say you can make money taking online surveys but I have yet to see proof of this myself. These companies appear to be reputable and quite popular online. The reason I never cashed out on these websites myself is simple, it just took too long to even reach the cash out threshold even once. I was not prepared to put that amount of time and effort in to get there. Read my reviews on I Say Surveys and Toluna. It appears to me that these companies are more about creating a fun, social space for people to connect. Something suitable to bored teenagers that have nothing to do with their time but mess around online in the hopes they can cash out enough to buy a milkshake on the weekend.

Now to the really bad ones, the ones that say that you can make money online but all they do is mess you around from start to finish and try and get you to hand over your personal information so they can spam you. They try and get you to take up paid offers to con you into spending your money instead of earning. The ones that really just ticked me off and made me want to throw my laptop! If you are serious about earning money, do your best to avoid Get Cash for Surveys, Only Cash Surveys and Mintvine.

Can you make money taking online surveys frustration

Can you make money taking online surveys from home? Well yes, I suppose you can.

The real question here is what do you mean by money?

When I talk about money I am referring to paying for my children’s school fees, saving up to buy a new house or perhaps a new car. I am not talking about making millions here, I am just talking about making a real difference to my life. If I can make more money getting a part time job for the weekends than I can from doing something online, where would I bother with it?

Can you make money taking online surveys time

If you are a broke student, bored and wanting to buy a can of Coca Cola in a week’s time by doing something brainless and annoying all day every day… then yeah this is for you. Go for it, you won’t be disappointed.

But if you are like me give the online surveys a skip and try something else, anything else. In fact rather sit at home and do absolutely nothing with your time. Have a rest or read a book. At least you will be gaining something from your time!

What is your experience with taking online surveys? Do you agree with me or perhaps you have found success and enjoyment from taking online surveys to earn extra money?

  1. Hello Lynne,

I tried some companies when I was broke to make money with online surveys. It was really disappointing. I got nowhere for the threeshold was too high to get something paid and I had not the time to wait for that money. The time one spends to make the dough is not worth the result. If one would try to make a living that way, there wouldn’t be enough to make a living at all. Maybe I’ll try Answered Insight to see if this works.

    I wish you success

    • Hi Alec

Try them out, at least they are legit and don’t waste your time. BUT don’t expect to make a lot even through them. It is a little extra pocket money you will receive on the odd occasion so make sure your mindset it right to use them and not have huge expectations.

      Kind Regards

  2. Hi Lynne
I want to tell you that i was in the same situation as you. I signed up for almost all the online surveys sites that are out there but i had a very HUGE disappointment.
First of all they have very few surveys available, I had like maybe 1 or 2 requests a month if lucky from them and make so few bucks than it will take me years to cash out lol. The second big problem is that maybe people from USA can make some more money from them but they don’t really have surveys for international. So from my point of view surveys are a waste of time and energy. I quit doing them, I only kept one from the country I am and I make a few bucks here and there but at least they are consistent and just for this I decided to keep them. But I don’t think this is an option to make a living with surveys, I don’t see how that can be possible. Wish you all the best!

    • Hi Alexandra

Thanks for sharing your experience. It is exactly the same as mine with online surveys. I have found one online survey company in my country and they are legitimate. I earn a little bit from them, but nothing to get excited about. My take is you can’t make money taking online surveys!

      Kind Regards

  3. The problem is many survey sites out there pay too little or do not surveys available frequently enough. The survey websites that have paid offers and referral systems tend to be unsuccessful and generally do not pay fairly. People tend to have success with the survey related site http://www.surveyhomebeginnings.org but the payouts vary from person to person based mainly on time spent. I hope people don’t expect to make hundreds a day but enough to at least be considered supplemental income.

    • Hi Matthew

      Thanks for visiting.

Yes I agree, even the legitimate companies don’t make it worth your time and effort with the amount they pay. I’ll check out that website, thanks for sharing 🙂

      Kind Regards

  4. Hi Lynne,
My opinion of online surveys is much like yours. In other words, they are a waste of time. There are many genuine survey sites where you will spend many hours answering questions for next to nothing. That’s if you don’t get the dreaded “sorry you don’t qualify for this survey” after spending 10 minutes on a survey.
Then there are the survey sites that are bad payers or that charge for a list of survey sites.
It’s a much better idea to spend some time building your own online business where you have the opportunity of earning a real income.
    Thanks for the post,

    • Hi Peter

I am glad to see you have a similar mindset! I have come across so many people that are happy with the few cents that they earn. I just find that sad. There are real ways to make money. For someone looking for an online business opportunity this is not the way to go. A lot of these websites make huge promises that are empty, some are scams and others are just time wasting exercises.

      Kind Regards

  5. Hi Lynne, I agree with you that it takes a lot of time doing the survey, but the rewards is so small. I rather do something else. One thing pretty annoying about survey is they ask you to go through a lot of screening question (10 mins or more), and at the end they decide that you’re not eligible for the survey. A big time waster.
I had quite some luck with ESearch in the past, but I have stopped taking survey altogether. I rather use my time to play with my kids, lol.

    • Hi Rina

I have never heard of Esearch before. I’ll check them out for a review 🙂

What you have said there is exactly it, there are so many better ways you can spend your time than sit online doing mindless “work” trying to make a few cents. Playing with your children is a great example! I can think of a lot of ways to spend that time that would be a lot more fulfilling. I also have children and they so badly just want to be with us, instead we waste time doing something pointless?

      Kind Regards

  6. HI. Most seem to be a waste of time and take time away from my marketing. I have been doing Harris Poll surveys, and I earned over $30 worth of gift cards. I enjoy doing them. At first, I was getting at least 1 survey per day, but now they’ve slowed to about every other day.

    • Hi Nancy

Yes it seems that happens quite often too, there are a lot to being with and then as time goes by there are often very few. I’m still making a little bit of money with surveys but its really nothing to get excited about.
