Introduction: What is Avon about?
Avon is a multi level marketing company that sells make up, skin care products, bath and body products, fragrances, jewelry, handbags, shoes, apparel and accessories.
They have been around for more than a century and are a household name. Personally I love what they say on their about page and it is such a feel good explanation.
This is the company that puts mascara on lashes and food on tables. That fights wrinkles with one hand and breast cancer with the other. That knows the value of a perfect lip, but still opens its mouth and speaks out against domestic violence and for women’s financial independence. This is the company that not only brings beauty to doors, but also opens them. The company that supports 6 million Representatives worldwide. This is Avon. The company that for more than 125 years has stood for beauty, innovation, optimism and, above all, for women.
So for this review of Avon I think it is really important to have a look at this company in the light of its reputation and the quality and pricing of its products as well as the opportunity to make money with them.
Let’s see what people online are saying about Avon and their products so we can get a good idea of their reputation.
Reviews of Avon Products?
Here with the Consumer Affairs website it is not looking so good with majority of Avon consumers giving them only 1 star. Reading through the reviews a lot of the people complaining about the products were also representatives. Click on the link and check it out for yourself.
And now looking at Avon products on Amazon we get a completely different version of what consumers think of Avon products. Most of the Avon products I found on Amazon were rated 4 stars or higher.
And digging some more the general consensus about Avon products seems to be that the products are standard to good quality with yes the odd complaints. Just remember that if you dig long enough and deep enough you will always find a complaint about something or someone.
One thing I must mention about the products and this is something I picked up on immediately. The Avon products are very reasonably priced and this is a multi level marketing company! I have to admit that immediately changed my view of Avon. Although I have often heard of Avon I have never gone so far as to see what their prices are. Being a multi level marketing company my assumption was that they would be highly expensive.
I am pleased to be proved wrong.
Ok so products are standard to good quality and the prices are good. Nice, this is looking like it may just be a nice opportunity.
What does it cost to be an Avon representative?
To sign up as a representative with Avon costs $15 and this will get you your starter pack. This gives you a starter kit, tools and resources, training and a free Avon eStore.
Can you make money with Avon?
Yes I believe you can. Oh my did I just say that about an MLM opportunity?
Ok it is not all a bed of roses, but let’s just say that these products are nicely priced, they are used by most women and the company has quite a nice reputation. So yes as far as any make money opportunity goes this one actually looks decent. That is not to say there are no cons, I’ll get to those next.
Avon Market Saturation?
This is something that has become clear to me looking at the Avon opportunity. So yes the product is nice, the price is good and the company has a good reputation. So what’s the problem? Well I did a little experiment in my area and I posted in a Facebook group for our area and I asked for the name and number for an Avon representative… and within 2 hours I had over 12 Avon representatives details.
This is fine if perhaps you are in a large urban area, but I live in a tiny little out of the way town. I called one of the ladies and asked her about Avon, I told her I was writing a review and I was interested to know if the products sell nicely. Her answer was yes that is fine, but where she makes the most money is recruiting others to be representatives. Once again, the focus is NOT on the product but on recruiting others. Quite frankly I was not surprised. So in a tiny little town Avon representatives are more focused on recruiting more Avon representatives and nobody is focused on selling the product. Go figure?
Here’s another interesting fact, according to Wikipedia Avon is struggling with falling sales and has been for a good number of years.
The Avon Compensation Plan
So what about the Avon compensation plan? How does that all work? I won’t go into that myself, here is an Avon video for you to watch instead.
Is Avon a scam?
No I don’t think Avon is a scam. In fact after doing all my research on Avon I consider then to be the best MLM opportunity I have come across so far. Yes they have almost all the cons associated with MLM opportunities but I actually think if you just sell the products you can build up an income. If you want to recruit others well then you know what I think of MLM!
Avon Pros and Cons
- Products are things that are needed every day by a large amount of people
- Products are reasonable quality
- Products are well priced
- Great range of products
- Lots of tools for marketing prodcuts
- The Avon company and products have a good reputation and is a long standing company
- You have your team leader for support
- You get a free eStore with social media tools
- Market saturation: with so much focus on recruiting and not so much on selling you will have lots of Avon representatives in your area
- It is not as easy to make money as they make it out to be
- MLM is not a good business model in my opinion, but this company does seem to put focus on its products!
My Verdict for Avon?
Oh my gosh I never thought I would say this about any MLM opportunity, but I think Avon is not a bad opportunity. Ok I don’t think it is the best and I truly despise MLM business models…
The thing is you can choose to focus on selling the products which will work in my opinion if you work very hard, but once you have a nice base of customers purchasing from you regularly it will be a nice way to make some extra money. Alternatively you can put your main focus on recruiting others. This is the side I really don’t like because how long can this type of thing be sustainable for? If everyone just focuses on recruiting others and nobody bothers trying to sell the product it just becomes a pyramid scheme.
I do think there is a much better way to earn money that doesn’t involve trying to sell products door to door in your area or to your friends and family. It is also a way to start earning residual income which is a wonderful long term plan isn’t it? Read my Wealthy Affiliate review for more information.
