How to Add Tags to your WordPress Posts and WHY you need to!

I’ve mentioned tags a number of times in my content and a good few times readers have asked me how to add tags to your WordPress posts so I decided to add a video to quickly show you exactly how this is done.

But before I show you how to add tags to your posts I just want to explain quickly what a tag is and why want to add tags to your posts. A tag is simply a way to describe what the post is about, it is similar to a category but you can go more in depth than with categories. Categories are more broad and tags give the reader more detail about the actual content.

Firstly adding tags to your posts will help the search engines to categorize your content and it can make a huge impact on your rankings!

Secondly adding tags to your posts will give your readers another way to navigate around your website so it helps with user experience. In turn this can also affect your ranking in the way that readers may just decide to move to another post on your website by using your tags. This decreases your bounce rate and also means that your reader stays on your website longer and this can increase your rankings.

There are so many things that go into ranking your website and adding tags can really make a difference. It just takes a few seconds to add tags to your posts so I advise that you take the time to do this little task.

How to Add Tags to your WordPress Posts

Adding tags is really simple. When you are editing or creating your WordPress post just look along the right hand side of your screen and you will see an option that says tags, just add them in there.

Always add your main keyword first and then add in all relevant topics related to the post. Try and use tags that have already been used instead of always adding new tags otherwise it will be useless for your readers to use tags to navigate around your website!

Add a good few tags but don’t overdo it. Only add tags that are relevant to your content.

I hope that you have found his quick tutorial showing you how to add tags to your WordPress posts useful.

  1. Thank you for this informative post.

Since I use WordPress too, I completely agree that adding tags is a very good thing to do and may even help in rankings!

It’s great to know that it reduces bounce rate too since that’s an issue which is very common and I’ll be using tags for that.

Thank you for the information again!

    • It is a pleasure Suhail :) My bounce rate has definitely lowered since using tags and like I said some of my tags have ranked on page 1 of Google which is incredible.

  2. This is an important concept when it comes to writing a blog. If people are looking for help on a specific subject, they do searches. Tags help emphasize those subjects that the blog is speaking about.

Wondering if you use keywords that are specific in your tags, or do you just put words at random (still specific to your blogs) in the tags?

    • Hi John

That is a great question. I have seen a lot of people throwing in everything including the kitchen sink when it comes to tags and this is not the way to go.

Add your main keyword only to the tags and then add in tags that fit the post and try to include tags that you have used before. It is important to remember that this is not a random throwing together of words.

So for example if someone clicks on my tag “TAG” in this post then other posts that I have mentioned tags in and where I have added the same tag will appear.

  3. Hello Lynne
I absolutely love your post. It is very helpful and this is something that a lot of people re looking for when building a website.
Tags are very important as they will increase traffic and your video really helps with a step by step process on how to add tags
Thank you for this help and I wish you the best of luck

    • Hi DJ

I am glad you enjoyed my video showing how to add tags to posts. It really is simple to do, but when it is your first time writing a post or adding tags it is important to know how to do it.

  4. Interesting article on adding tags to your wordpress posts, using the same tags is interesting to be the best theory of using tags.

Why would it not wise to add new tags when you write about new topics, how will people find your website on the new topic with your used tags?

    • Well when someone clicks on your tag they will be taken to a page where all your posts with that same tag will be listed right? So if you only use unique tags each time you write a post your users won’t be able to use tags to navigate your website. Instead they will just find a page with the only post listed being the one they have just read.

You want to enable your readers to move around your website easily.

Yes you can add new tags when you write on a new topic, but make sure the tags you add can be used for future posts too.

  5. Hi Lynne! This is a very good post. I’ve always wondered what is the difference between tag and category. Thanks for the simple explanation!

But let’s say my blog has a long keyword (combination of 2 or 3 words). Is it okay to use the whole long keyword as tag?

    • Hi Isaac

Yes totally, a tag can be more than one word! My tag in this post is “how to add tags to wordpress posts” :)

I am glad you enjoyed this post and found it helpful.

  6. This is something I really have to consider since sooo many people have different opinions about tags.

Like seriously, I’ve heard people saying that you shouldn’t even worry about them, others say that they could even impact your rankings in a negative way!

At the end of the day, I usually just put 3-4 tags that are relevant to the post and I don’t think twice about it.

    • Julius I have also found that I hear contradicting things all the time. That is why I have found the best thing is to ask around and then do my own research and testing.

My findings for tags has been that they are huge help with ranking and for my users to navigate around my website.
