Free Images for a Website? Here’s where to get them!

Getting free images for a website needn’t be hard.

Free Images for a WebsiteRemember that getting images for your website is a vital part of owning an online business. Because people are visual by nature you will get more traffic and conversations which means your website will rank better.

Not only does having images make your website more shareable, you are also giving visitors the opportunity to share your content easier. If you have no images your content cannot be shared on Pinterest!

Look here for free images for a website:

Just keep in mind that although the images may be free to download they might not be copyright free. You may be required to give the author credit. Some free images give full purpose access.

You can also search for a specific image by entering this into Google:

“I grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.” + type_of_image

Take Screenshots

This is easy enough to do, just push PrntScr on a PC or Apple + Shift + 4 on your Mac.

This is a great way to get the exact images you want and at no cost to you. We all have a phone, ipad or camera to take pics. Make use of this, as you have all the rights because they are your pics!

Using Paid Images

I regularly use paid images too, here are some great places to check out that won’t break the bank:

  • Fotolia pricing varies per package, great prices available!
  • Dollar Photo Club $1 per image   Sorry Dollar Photo Club recently closed down.
  • iStockphoto Different packages starting from $199 for 250 images = $0.80 per image
  • Shutter Stock if you are needing a huge amount of images this is the place to be. Starting from $199 per month for 750 images = $0.26 per image (this is for a year subscription)

If you have any other places to find free images for a website please share in the comments!

  1. Sounds like good advice. I would like to ask though…would you say most images available for download on the internet, carry a fee? I mean, I built a site too, and just assumed that if no fee on the image page was announced, then it was by default, free to use as a small illustration, etc. Was I wrong?

    • It really depends on where you go to look Ayugen! You cannot just download any image you want from anyone’s website. The websites I listed as free you can search around and when you find an image you like check the usage options for that particular image. I added screenshots on your other comment 🙂

  2. Would you say it’s a good policy to look for a requested fee and the image license as well?

    • Here is an example of a free image from freeimages.com

You can see on the right hand side it says Royalty Free and you can click on the Usage Options link to check how are allowed to use that image. Here is what you are allowed to do with this image:
      null

    • Pleasure Kathy, I hope you found this helpful!

  3. Love this article – gave me two choices I was not aware of before today!
I have used Pixabay over the last couple of years and I find their quality absolutely brilliant. I also like the way they update frequently and don’t throw sponsors in your face!
Out of the three free options you have covered – which one is your favorite?

    • I like freeimages, simple to use and lots of options. I have browsed around Pixabay a few times but I haven’t made much use of them before.

  4. I love Pixabay! It’s such a quick and easy way to get free images that you don’t even need to give any attribution for.

I would like to correct you on one little thing, however: You say that if your webpage doesn’t have any images then it can’t be shared on Pinterest. Strictly speaking, this is not true. A Pinterest user can find their own image and manually create a pin with that image that links to your webpage. However, not many people are likely to do that.

    • LOL Marcus, that is very true! They can do that, but as you say it is not very likely. Best to make your content easy to share on as many social networks as possible 🙂

  5. Dear Lynne,

I love Pixabay. 🙂 That is my Top Pick always now. Great search directory, no attribution needed. 🙂 High quality pictures I have ever seen. 🙂

However, are you familiar with knowing how to get Google Images too that are safe to be used with your website also?

    • Hi Angel
No, I have not yet tried Google Images, only the ones mentioned in this post. If you have any tips please feel free to share!I will be happy to add that info to my post.
      Thanks

  6. Hy, Lynne

I’ve spent a long time trying to find places online to find free images for my blog’s content, and I’m pleased that I just found your post as you’ve helped to show me where to get them 🙂

Thanks for the other recommendations too of taking screen shots and using a camera which sounds fun. However, I’m not a big fan of paying for images since I’m on a tight budget, but maybe when I start making a good amount of money online.

    • Hi Neil

It is a pleasure. It often takes quite a bit of time searching for suitable images. My method is to search through the free sites mentioned and if I don’t find anything I then use dollarphotoclub.com as they always have wonderful images available at $1 each.

I am so glad I could assist and hope this makes a difference for you.

      Kind Regards

      Lynne

  7. Thanks for the list of source. Have several websites and dozen of fan page, I am very much in need of images. I forgot about a few of your options and plan to check them out. The paid options seem expensive, but sound like it maybe worth the cost for someone like me, who is need of 100s of images a month. Likes for making me aware.

    • Hi Lark

Yes, I also use lots of images. I just like the paid services for stock images because it is quicker to find relevant images. My favourite is dollarphoto.com by far! Remember your time is also money, so if you spend a long time trying to find one image that is also money.

      Kind Regards

      Lynne

  8. Hi, your article is concise and straight to the point. Have not heard of pixabay and free images before, i will exploit the opportunity of these free image sites and also of the paid once like dollar photo and istockphoto.I have a question, how do i give credit to the author for his image? Really want to know how to do it, looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks, all the best, God bless you.

    • Hey Peter, giving recognition simply means that the person that created the image doesn’t mind you using it, as long as you let everyone know it is his image when you use it 🙂

Personally I really enjoy Dollar Photo, very easy to use and it makes my day much easier when searching for images is so quick and easy.
